Inspired from a young age…

Lefteris was born in Athens in 1980. He holds a Diploma in Production and Management Engineering from the Technical University of Crete (2004) and completed a PhD in Energy (2008). After completing his PhD, he spent seven years teaching at the university level, bringing together his technical knowledge and love for teaching.

His love for the sea and sailing was nurtured from early childhood, rooted in a family tradition—his father is a professional shipmaster from the island of Tinos. It was only natural for Lefteris to follow his passion and build a life connected to the sea.

Bringing together his background as an engineer, years of university teaching, and a lifelong love for the sea, Lefteris found a unique way to blend all three. Encouraged by friends and fellow sailors, he created the SailingCompass Academy — an online platform designed to make sailing knowledge more accessible, practical, and enjoyable for everyone.

Lefteris holds the Skipper’s license issued by Chania Nautical Club (2000), the Yacht Master Certificate issued by Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (2012) as well as the motorboat permit issued by the Hellenic Coastguard (1999). In 2019, he became Offshore Sailing Instructor certified by the Hellenic Ministry of Sports – General Secretariat of Sports (completing the Hellenic Sailing Federation courses).

Aside from his sailing skills, he is certified in First Aid by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), with training in Basic Life Support and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use (last updated 2023).

Since 2015, Lefteris has been working with several sailing clubs, including Nautical Athlete Club of Vari-Varkiza and IOP-DEI, as an Open Sea Sailing Instructor.

Sailing Regatta Races Experience

From 1999 to the present, he has participated in open sea sailing events, either with his personal boat or as a crew on other boats. His greatest distinction, among others, is his participation for ten consecutive years (2004-2013) in what is presumed the most difficult and demanding sailing event at open sea – the Aegean Rally (traditional yearly event organized by the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club), with entries from all over Europe.

He is also member of the Chania Nautical Club .
